RAT MOTEL

     The Rat Motel first appeared in 2016 as a collective dream sustained by brothers Seth and Clayton Peacock. After a speedy and unanimous decision to drop the undeniably pretentious article “The,” Rat Motel quickly became a staple of the Columbus, Ohio scene with their massive dual-cylinder live sets and infectious buzz rock recordings, opening for The Beths, Pile, The Dirty Nil, and Twen. They have since half-relocated to Brooklyn and established themselves in the NYC, Philly, and New Jersey scenes, quickly making their way into venues like Brooklyn Bowl and Brooklyn Made. They’re still Midwest heroes; they continue to host the annual charity festival RATFEST every fall in Columbus, and are recognized as locals in every city along I-71. After releasing several singles and EPs, fan favorite “Dog” was featured in the film “Poser,” distributed by Oscilloscope Laboratories. Their debut studio album “The Rat Motel” was released in the summer of 2023 (the “The” had to come back somehow). It’s a dizzying peek into a tangled underworld of stories and dreams, using the blunt force of their gargantuan performances to graft intricately satisfying songwriting onto carefully orchestrated nightscapes that would make Nick Cave proud.

Biography

     Rat Motel emerged with astounding elegance and ease for a structure of its size. When Old Man Winkle retired to the master suite for the last time there was a brief but violent power struggle resulting in the ascension of the brothers Peacock. (The rats, though indelibly embittered by this conclusion, were nonetheless satisfied that none of their own had clawed their way to the top.) In a fit of existential dread, unendearing arrogance, and a desperate yearning for eternity, a lofty aspect of the Motel rechristened itself “THE” Rat Motel, though the lower being refuses to carry the pretenses of such a definite article. It is what it is and that is enough. But try as The Rat Motel might to manifest the mad speculation of Zeno, the fact remains that Zeno was wrong. The infinite sum of one half raised to the power of each of the natural numbers is indeed equal to one; the hare will overtake the tortoise; and even THE Rat Motel, which towers below the universe with grinning pride, will one day crumble into THE dust of The Empty Plane with a predictable lack of elegance and ease.
